Our Origin

ORIGIN: DARIÉN

Our community, puru biakiru, was founded on Thursday 31 May 2018. Initially today the community was known as puru biakiru which in Emberá dialect means "beautiful village".

The first individuals to settle were the Ruiz Family, Elías Ruiz and his wife Alicia Caisamo and their 5 sons, Eneldo Ruiz, Ángel Ruiz, Euclides Ruiz, Iván Ruiz and Eliecer Ruiz. They left the province of Darien in the 1970s in search of a better life near Panama City. The economic situation in Darién had become very difficult and they could no longer make a good living from agriculture. In addition, the clandestine Colombian drug trafficking groups in the Darién were a major threat to their security.

At that time they practised subsistence farming and hunting to support themselves and their families. They also practised traditional medicine for health and handicrafts for everyday tools, as well as clothing, decorative items and accessories.

OUR ANCESTORS

Elías Ruiz, our grandfather, was a humble man. He was a farmer, an expert in medicinal plants and a skilled craftsman in traditional Emberá carvings in cocobolo wood. His wife, Alicia Caisamo, together they forged a small and humble community in the jungle of Alto Chagres. They practised subsistence farming and hunting to support themselves and their family.

DISCOVER OUR HISTORICAL TOURISM

We started working in tourism in 1996. In the beginning, we sought and received a lot of help from the Panama Tourism Board (IPAT), the World Bank and several local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

WARRARA CRINCHA RL

Our business is now a formalised cooperative, created on Friday 23rd March 2018 recognised by the Panamanian government. It is called "COOPERATIVA DE SERVICIOS MULTIPLES WARRARA CRINCHA RL".

We are working very hard to grow our inbound tourism. We are learning about accounting, marketing and computers so that we can manage our new co-operative more efficiently. We are also learning English so that we can invite more independent tourists to visit us, and we are educating our children so that one day they can take over our business!

Tourism has turned out to be a very good option for our community. It has a low environmental impact, but has long-term sustainability. And most importantly for us, tourism has caused a renaissance in our traditional Emberá arts and culture. We are proud of who we are, and we are especially proud to share who we are with you, our visitors. It is you, our tourists, who help us to sustainably live this special way of life.
